Families,
The following is being sent early this weekend to provide you with time to discuss with your child, staff members that are leaving Fernwood. We know the importance of relationships that is created between a teacher and students. It can be difficult for some students to learn that a trusted educator is leaving their school. Thank you for supporting your child in processing what they may feel as a loss or grief at hearing this news.
Celebrating our Staff Moving On
In thinking about wrapping up the year, we are so fortunate to have a dedicated staff who care deeply about our students’ individual, social-emotional, and academic needs. As we near the conclusion of the 2024-25 school year, it is important we acknowledge those staff that will not be returning next year so students and families can share their goodbyes. As students begin the 25-26 school year, the staff named below will be retiring, returning to work at another school within the Northshore School District, or moving on to a new journey in education.
Colleen Johnson - LAP/ELD
Colleen has been an educator for 26 years, with 22 of those years as part of our Fernwood community. We are so thankful for all her years of service and support of our students and staff. Colleen teaches with warmth, compassion and obvious love for her students. Colleagues trust and rely on Colleen's skill and knowledge as a collaborative educator. Colleen's impact on students and colleagues is immeasurable. As she prepares for retirement, Colleen plans to enjoy her time traveling, gardening and developing new hobbies. We are excited to hear about her new adventures!
Laura Bentz- Special Education
Laura joined Fernwood this as a special education teacher. She immediately became part of our Fernwood family, establishing relationships with staff, students and families. We wish Laura all the best as she relocates to Bainbridge Island with her family and continues her work supporting students.
Norma Kvarda- 2nd grade
Norma joined Fernwood as a leave replacement in 2nd grade and we are so grateful to have had her as part of our Fernwood community. Students in Norma's class develop agency over their learning, are nurtured to be critical thinkers and develop a strong sense of community. Norma will continue as an educator in the Northshore School District supporting and nurturing students.
Julia Hutcheson- Kindergarten
We are so thankful that Fernwood got to be the start of Julia's teaching career. Julia is a loving, supportive and innovative teacher. Students in Julia's class experience belonging, encouragement to be themselves and know they are valued. We wish Julia the best and hope one day we find her back at Fernwood!
Sarah Cue - Counselor
Sarah joined Fernwood three years ago as a school counselor, supporting our students in their social and emotional growth in partnership with Jennifer Brisbine. We are so appreciative of all the ways Sarah has supported students, staff and families. From greeting students in the morning, guiding lunch bunches, or teaching lessons in classrooms, Sarah has made a difference in our Fernwood community. We know she will continue to have that same impact on the students of Inglemoor High School and Canyon Park Middle School next year.
*Due to budget cuts, Fernwood will only have one counselor for the 2025-26 school year.
Fernwood BBQ Lunch
Thank you to NSD Food Services for offering to provide a special BBQ Lunch! On June 9th, we will be having a special BBQ lunch for students only. This is the ONLY option for a school lunch this day. In the spirit of building community, we are inviting students to sit with other students in their lunch time, not just in their class.
Incoming Kindergarten Information Night
Welcome future Panthers and class of 2037!
We are so excited to meet you that we decided we could not wait until September and would like to invite you to our Fernwood Incoming Kindergarten Night on Tuesday, June 10th, from 5:30-6:45 PM.
Our Kindergarten Team has put together a fun and engaging evening that will allow your incoming kindergartener to get to know some of the faces they will see next year, meet their future classmates, and become familiar with our learning spaces at Fernwood.
While your child enjoys the activities, our parents/families are invited to learn more about what to expect in kindergarten from Principal Morton and Assistant Principal Crane. This will also be a great opportunity to meet the families of your child's future friends and classmates! We have a wonderful community here, and these early opportunities to connect can be very supportive in fostering excitement and reassurance before this big transition.
Please note that this event is centered around our incoming kindergarteners, and we ask that siblings either do not attend or remain with grown-ups in the parent/family meeting for the duration of the event. Thank you for your understanding!
To support our planning and preparation for the event, please RSVP by noon on June 6th.

Grad Walk
We are excited to have our previous Fernwood students that are graduating, walk through our campus on June 11th at 10:15am. Current students and staff will be out on the sidewalks to greet the grads!
